When Should Students Begin the College Preparation Process? We begin preparing students for the college application process in as early as the 9th grade, and work with them throughout their high school years. Why Do We Need an Independent Educational Consultant? An independent counselor supplements your high school counselor’s efforts by providing additional personalized guidance throughout the college admissions process. This may include working with you to develop a balanced list of universities, helping create your activity list, preparing for interviews and college visits, explaining the admissions process, and helping with brainstorming and editing components of the application. An independent counselor will not contact an admissions office on behalf of the student, nor can an independent counselor “get” a student admitted. Be wary of anyone who promises to get your student into an Ivy League university – no one can guarantee admission and this premise violates the ethics of the profession.
